Michiyo Azusa

Michiyo Azusa, born Michiyo Hayashi in Busan under Japanese rule in 1943 and raised in Fukuoka, will always be introduced by one song: Konnichiwa Akachan, Hello Baby, the 1963 record that won the Japan Record Award. It is a slight, tender thing about greeting a newborn, and it became enormous because the country happened to be in exactly that mood — young, expanding, optimistic about what came next. Songs like that fuse to their decade permanently. But reducing her to it does her a disservice. Follow her forward to Futari de Osake wo and Melancholy and you hear a completely different performer: not sweetness but something weathered, adult, a little bruised. She had studied at the Takarazuka Music School before leaving it, took a stage name, and worked as an actress as well as a singer, which shows in how she inhabits a lyric rather than merely delivering it. She died in 2020. The lullaby is still being hummed by people who have no idea who sang it first, which is its own kind of survival.
