My Take
Miho Kanno is the kind of actress who makes you forget you're watching a performance — she just disappears into a role, and suddenly the character is the only real thing on screen. She broke through in the late '90s with that Elan d'Or newcomer prize, but honestly the award was the least interesting thing about her; what grabbed people was the unsettling depth she could summon behind those soft, almost girlish features. That contrast is her superpower — she can play sweet and she can play genuinely unnerving, sometimes in the same scene, and you never catch her working at it. For a generation of Japanese drama fans she's simply one of the greats, and I think she's criminally underappreciated by anyone outside Japan who hasn't gone down that rabbit hole yet.
