My Take

What I admire about Mike Epps is that he never lost the street-corner texture of his stand-up even as he climbed into film. Day-Day in the Friday films and Black Doug in The Hangover are cocky yet weirdly lovable, and that balance is harder to pull off than it looks. The move into producing and directing tells me he wants to control the whole frame, not just stand in it. Indianapolis grit, Scorpio persistence. He survived on the strength of making a room laugh in real time, and that earned-the-hard-way quality is exactly why I keep rooting for him.
