My Take
Mikhail Baryshnikov is, for me, the rare artist whose life is as dramatic as his art. Defecting from the Kirov Ballet to the West in 1974 was a leap of pure conviction, and the dancing that followed defined an era; he was simply the preeminent male classical dancer of his time. What moves me more, though, is that he never coasted on that peak. He reinvented himself as a choreographer and actor and earned honors from the Kennedy Center to Japan's Praemium Imperiale. I see him less as a prodigy than as a relentless explorer who treated mastery as a starting point.
