Mónica Bardem

Mónica Bardem intrigues me precisely because she chose to carve her own path within Spain's most formidable acting dynasty, alongside her mother Pilar and brothers Carlos and Javier. Appearing in Almodovar's Kika is a fine credit, but what I admire more is that she also ran the family restaurants in Madrid until the 2013 closure forced by hard economics. There is something deeply human about an artist who lives several lives at once and weathers failure without theatrics. I respect people who stand beside fame rather than chase it, and Bardem strikes me as exactly that kind of unfussy, grounded figure.
