My Take

Murray Perahia is, for me, close to the platonic ideal of a pianist. Winning the Leeds Competition in 1972 as the first North American to do so was only the start of a half-century at the very top, and the knighthood and Bach Prize barely capture his stature. What moves me is the sound itself: his Bach has an inner clarity, each voice singing with luminous balance that few can match. I also respect the resilience behind it, the repeated injuries and comebacks that show a musician utterly wedded to his instrument. He plays as if listening were itself an act of devotion.
