My Take

To me, Koichi Sugiyama will always be the Dragon Quest guy, and honestly that's a heck of a legacy to carry. I love that this Tokyo-born University of Tokyo grad poured such sweeping, orchestral romance into little 8-bit chips, that opening overture has launched a thousand childhood adventures and it still gives me chills the second it kicks in. He came to video game music late in life and basically defined what a game score could sound like, treating it as serious symphonic work worthy of the concert hall. I also have a soft spot for his Gatchaman suite. Conducting well into his eighties, decorated as a Person of Cultural Merit, he was the real deal until the end in 2021. Whatever you think of him personally, the man wrote melodies that live rent-free in millions of heads, mine included.
