My Take
Mylène Farmer interests me because raw commercial dominance and genuine artistry rarely coexist as cleanly as they do in her career. Twenty-one number ones in France, eight of them consecutive, is staggering, yet she also writes her own lyrics and claims the title of poet, which tells me the success was authored, not manufactured. Born in Quebec but enthroned in France, she built an aura of literary melancholy that set her apart from ordinary pop stardom. I admire performers who control their own mythology, and she clearly did. Selling 35 million records while remaining mysterious is a balancing act I find genuinely impressive.
