Nao Matsushita

What gets me about Nao Matsushita is that the piano is not a line in her profile. She trained at Tokyo College of Music and can hold a room with it. Plenty of performers claim two careers and usually one of them is decoration; hers are not. She acts, she sings, she plays, and none of it reads like a press release. Born in Nara Prefecture in 1985, raised in Kawanishi in Hyogo, and standing 174 cm, she has the kind of presence that could easily have been sold on looks alone, yet the through line of her work is craft rather than noise. The Elan d'or Newcomer Award in 2011 followed her turn as the lead of a morning drama, which is about as public a test as Japanese television administers. I have a soft spot for performers who keep turning up at the centre of things without ever appearing to push. She is one of them.
