My Take
What I respect about Neil Marshall is that he made his name in the trenches of British horror before anyone handed him a budget. The Descent still feels like the high-water mark to me, claustrophobia done with real craft, and it's no accident he also cut his own films. The pivot into bigger studio fare like the 2019 Hellboy didn't land the same way for me, which I think says more about the machinery around those productions than his instincts. I keep coming back to the idea that he's at his sharpest when the scale is small and the stakes are personal.
