My Take

What I admire about Nick Barmby is the quiet professionalism of his career. He spent almost the entire run in the Premier League, but rather than ruling one club as a star, he was the kind of intelligent, hardworking midfielder that good teams keep wanting. At 170 cm he was never imposing, so he survived on brains and energy instead. The fact he moved into coaching tells me he was always reading the game while playing. I have a real soft spot for understated craftsmen like this, and Barmby strikes me as exactly that sort of unsung pro.
