Nick Cheung

Nick Cheung is one of those Hong Kong actors I find quietly fascinating. He built his name in comedy, then steadily expanded his range until he claimed the 2009 Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor, proof of real dramatic depth. What I respect most is his refusal to stay in one lane; he moved into directing too, which tells me he's a genuine film obsessive rather than a coasting star. Hong Kong cinema rewards grafters who climb through the trenches, and Cheung fits that mold perfectly. His later work has only grown richer, and I expect him to keep deepening.
