Nils Frahm

Nils Frahm is one of the artists I return to most often, and his music rewards that loyalty. The textbook description, blending classical and electronic, undersells what he actually does: he builds intimate, breathing spaces out of grand pianos, uprights, Junos, and Moogs all sounding at once. Because he engineers his own recordings, every faint hammer click and pedal creak feels deliberate and loved. That attention is why his work feels human rather than clinical. The German Film Award is fitting recognition, but to me his real gift is composing atmosphere itself. He makes the late hours of the night feel less lonely.
