My Take
Abbath, born Olve Eikemo in Bergen, is for me one of black metal's true originals rather than a mere genre footnote. As a founding member of Immortal, he helped forge the icy, theatrical Norwegian sound that countless bands later imitated. That unmistakable croak of a voice and the corpse paint felt absurd to me at first, then slowly became hypnotic. What impresses me most is his range as a musician who drums, plays guitar and sings. Walking away from Immortal in 2015 to build a band under his own name took real conviction. I quietly admire artists who guard their cold, uncompromising vision.
