My Take

Paul Cook is honestly one of the most underrated figures in rock history, and I'll die on that hill. While everyone else was losing their minds over Johnny Rotten's sneer or Sid Vicious's self-destruction, Cook was back there holding the whole chaotic circus together with genuinely solid drumming — and that's no small feat when your bandmates are basically human grenades. Born in Hammersmith in 1956, he was right there at ground zero when punk exploded in London, a founding member of the Sex Pistols from the very beginning. His playing wasn't flashy, but that was the point: underneath all the spit and safety pins, there was a real drummer keeping the beat. Cookie gave the Pistols their spine, and without him, "Anarchy in the U.K." is just noise.
