My Take

Paul Mariner strikes me as the archetype of the old-school English centre forward, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Rising from Chorley in the lower reaches to become one of Plymouth Argyle's greatest ever, with 61 goals in 155 games, he was a grafter who earned every yard. He later moved into coaching, passing the trade along. His passing in 2021 closed a genuinely well-traveled football life. I'm drawn to players forged the hard way, the ones who scrapped up the ladder rather than gliding down it. Mariner's memory deserves to endure.
