My Take
Paul Weitz fascinates me because of his range. The same filmmaker who, with his brother Chris, helped launch the raunchy American Pie also crafted the tender, unexpectedly wise About a Boy, earning a shared Oscar nomination for the latter. That swing from gross-out comedy to genuine emotional intelligence is harder to pull off than people credit. I value directors who hide real feeling beneath laughter, and Weitz consistently does. His Wesleyan-honed sensibility never feels showy; it simply serves the story and the audience. Among American comedy filmmakers of his generation, he is one I think deserves more serious appreciation.
