My Take
Peter Murrell embodies, for me, the tangled reality of political life behind the scenes. The Edinburgh-born, Glasgow-educated operative served as Chief Executive of the Scottish National Party from 2001 to 2023 and was married to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, placing him at the very heart of Scottish power. He ran the party's engine room for over two decades, yet he embezzled more than £400,000 of party funds and was jailed in 2026. To me he is a study in how the unseen machinery of politics can both build and unravel a reputation. I find him a genuinely complex figure, worth remembering for the light and shadow alike.
