My Take
Phyllis Logan embodies, for me, the deep bench of British acting. A Scot from Paisley, she announced herself by winning the BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer for Another Time, Another Place in the early eighties, and four decades later she is still essential. Her Mrs Hughes in Downton Abbey is a small marvel: dignity and warmth held in perfect tension, plus a Screen Actors Guild ensemble award to show for it. What I love is the absence of vanity in her work. She is a craftswoman who has only grown richer with age, and I hold her in genuine, unreserved esteem.
