My Take

What strikes me most about Richard Madden is how thoroughly the stage shaped him before the cameras ever did. Cast in his first role at eleven, trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, touring the world as Romeo with Shakespeare's Globe — that is an old-fashioned actor's apprenticeship, and it shows in the stillness he brings to the screen. I love that he returned to Romeo in the West End in 2016, nearly a decade later; few actors get to revisit a role with that kind of symmetry.
