My Take

Rick Allen is, to me, one of the most quietly inspiring figures in rock. The drummer of Def Leppard since 1978, he lost his left arm in a car accident in 1985 and, instead of walking away, rebuilt his entire technique around a custom electronic kit triggered partly by his feet. Then the band went on to its biggest commercial run. Fans call him 'The Thunder God,' and I think that nickname carries real weight rather than hype. I find his story moving not because of sympathy but because of stubborn craft. He simply refused to let the instrument be taken from him.

Overview

Richard John Cyril Allen (born 1 November 1963) is an English musician who has been the drummer of the hard rock band Def Leppard since 1978. He overcame the amputation of his left arm in 1985 and continued to play with the band, which went on to its most commercially successful phase. Known as "The Thunder God" by fans, he is ranked No. 7 on Gigwise in The Greatest Drummers of All Time list.
