Robert James-Collier

James-Collier won me over entirely as Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey. He took a scheming, prickly servant and refused to leave him a mere villain, layering in loneliness and quiet ache until the character became the show's most human figure. His chops were already proven back in Coronation Street. He's the actor who, rather than headlining, leaves the deepest mark within an ensemble. I trust performers who can find genuine humanity in a bad man, and that's precisely his gift. Unshowy but soulful, he's the sort of British actor who gives a drama its real weight.
