My Take

Rudy Gestede is my kind of footballer: a towering 193 cm striker out of the Metz youth system, all aerial menace and old-fashioned center-forward grit. There is a romance to a big number nine who wins headers and bullies defenders, and I never tire of it. What I respect even more is the second act. Now running football operations at Blackburn Rovers, he brings the hard-earned knowledge of a goalscorer into the front office, and players tend to trust someone who has done the dirty work himself. Unflashy on the pitch and loyal off it, he embodies a craftsman's career I genuinely admire.

After coming through the youth ranks at Metz, Gestede spent a year on loan gaining experience with Cannes, scoring four goals in 22 appearances, before returning to Metz in 2010.
