My Take

I'll be honest, the first time I heard Toshi hit those soaring X JAPAN high notes, I genuinely did a double-take, because there's just no way a human throat is supposed to make a sound that clean and that piercing. He's got this almost crystalline tenor that can go full power-ballad tearjerker on something like "Endless Rain" and then turn around and scream over Yoshiki's wall of speed metal without breaking a sweat. What gets me, though, is the long road he took, the years he spent away and lost in the wilderness before finding his way back to the stage. That comeback story makes me root for him even harder. A kid from Tateyama in Chiba ends up moving fans all over the world with his voice, and somehow he just keeps showing up to sing. I love that stubborn, unpolished sincerity.
