Toshi

I'll be honest, the first time I heard Toshi hit those soaring X JAPAN high notes, I genuinely did a double-take, because there's just no way a human throat is supposed to make a sound that clean and that piercing. He's got this almost crystalline tenor that can go full power-ballad tearjerker on something like "Endless Rain" and then turn around and scream over Yoshiki's wall of speed metal without breaking a sweat. What gets me, though, is the long road he took: he left the band at the end of 1997 and spent twelve years with Home of Heart, a group he later said had "brainwashed" him and whose leader controlled his music, before cutting ties in 2010. That comeback story makes me root for him even harder. A kid from Tateyama in Chiba ends up moving fans all over the world with his voice, and somehow he just keeps showing up to sing. I love that stubborn, unpolished sincerity.
