My Take
Seiya Maikuma is the kind of player I find myself quietly rooting for. He didn't come up through some flashy J-League academy pipeline — he took the long road through Momoyama Gakuin University, which tells you something right there about the kind of grind he had to put in. Born in Nagasaki in 1997, there's a salt-air, work-ethic quality to a journey that ran from V-Varen Nagasaki through Cerezo Osaka to AZ in the Netherlands. The name itself hits different too — Seiya, written with that character meaning something like radiant brightness — feels like a lot to live up to, but from what I can tell, he's the type who earns it through repetition rather than hype. I don't need a trophy cabinet to be interested in someone. Sometimes the guy just running his routes, doing the unglamorous work, is the one worth watching.
