My Take
Shawn Mendes interests me because he survived the transition that kills most internet-born stars. Posting covers as a teenager from Pickering, Ontario, could have made him a footnote; instead he turned that head start into real musicianship — writing his own songs, playing guitar and piano, filling arenas while still in his teens. A Time 100 nod at nineteen says plenty. But what I find most compelling is his willingness to be publicly vulnerable about mental health, stepping back when the machine demanded more. That honesty, rare in pop's relentless economy, suggests an artist building for decades rather than chasing the next chart week.
