Shim Jae-kwon

Shim Jae-kwon's birthdate, 15 August 1946, immediately stands out to me: that is Korea's Liberation Day, the symbol of independence. Born that day in Samnye in North Jeolla and later becoming a politician, he belongs to the generation that grew up amid postwar upheaval and rebuilt from it. I have a genuine respect for regional politicians who carry their hometown's voice into national life rather than chasing the capital's spotlight. He served three terms in the National Assembly for the Democratic Party camp, chaired its Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, and holds a doctorate in international politics from Monash University. That kind of grounded public service deserves more attention than it gets.
