My Take
Sophie Thompson strikes me as the actor's actor, the name London theatre people say with a knowing smile. One Olivier Award and six further nominations across three decades is not luck; it is a body of work built role by role, from Sondheim revivals to the soap-opera kitchens of EastEnders. I love performers who treat a musical, a television serial, and a straight play with the same seriousness, and she seems constitutionally incapable of coasting. If I could buy a ticket into any West End rehearsal room, hers is the craft I would most want to watch up close.
