My Take

To me, Steve Mackey is the kind of musician I admire most: the one who builds the foundation rather than chasing the spotlight. Holding down the low end for Pulp during Britpop's peak was already a feat, but his second act as a producer is what really impresses me. Working across artists as varied as Florence + the Machine, Arcade Fire and M.I.A. shows a rare elasticity of taste. His Royal College of Art background hints at a designer's eye applied to sound. His death in 2023 was a quiet loss, and I think his fingerprints on great records deserve far more recognition.
