Steven Davis

Steven Davis is the sort of footballer I quietly champion. At a modest 173 cm, the Ballymena midfielder became the most-capped Northern Ireland player ever, with a record 140 appearances that no British home nations man has matched. Those numbers come not from spectacular goals but from showing up, game after game, doing the unglamorous connective work in midfield. Captaining his country to the last 16 at Euro 2016 and earning an MBE only underline a career built on reliability. I think durability and consistency are badly underrated forms of talent, and few embody them as completely as Davis. His move into coaching feels fitting.
