My Take

I love the contrast at the heart of Stipe Drews, born Stipe Drviš in the sun-soaked Adriatic resort town of Makarska, yet hardened into a 196 cm world champion. When he captured the WBA light heavyweight title in April 2007, he wrote his name into Croatian boxing history with one defining night. There is something cinematic about a fighter from a postcard-pretty coast keeping opponents at bay with that long reach. I am drawn to athletes who change history in a single decisive moment, and Drews did exactly that. Retired now, but the record stands, and I find that kind of one-shot legacy thrilling.
