Hidekazu Akai

I'll be honest, Hidekazu Akai is one of those guys I just root for instinctively. He came up out of Nishinari in Osaka swinging fists, "Naniwa no Rocky," all hunger and bad intentions in the ring, and somehow that same kid ended up cracking jokes on TV with the warmest grin you've ever seen. That arc fascinates me. His boxing career ended after a world-title TKO loss and then a knockout that left him with an acute subdural hematoma and emergency brain surgery. His first film, Dotsuitarunen (1989), won him a string of newcomer awards. I love that he never pretended to be anything but a tough kid from the neighborhood who happened to find a softer way to throw punches. There's no polish on him, and that's exactly why I trust him.
