Stjepan Hauser

Hauser is, for me, proof that the cello can be a rock instrument without losing its soul. As half of 2CELLOS alongside Luka Šulić, this Pula-born Croatian helped drag classical performance into arenas, attacking pop and rock arrangements with theatrical abandon. What I love is the dual nature of his playing, the growling low end and the singing melodic line delivered with unapologetic showmanship. His 2014 Order of Danica Hrvatska confirms his national stature, but his real achievement is widening the audience for an instrument many wrote off as stuffy. He plays like the music is a matter of life and death.
