Sugizo

Sugizo does two jobs that each take a lifetime. He is the lead guitarist of Luna Sea, one of the bands that built Japanese visual kei from 1989 onward, and he plays violin in the same band, then writes and produces on top of it. Add his membership in X Japan and you have a musician standing on two of the thickest roots of Japanese rock at once, which almost nobody else can claim. Because he looks the way he does, it is tempting to file him under decadent glamour, but everything I hear in his playing sounds like a craftsman with his hands dirty. His long-running advocacy — refugee support, environmental causes — reads the same way: not a side project, just an extension of the work. A kid from Kanagawa who ended up shaping how a whole genre sounds.
