My Take

Sunmi is one of those rare K-pop artists who managed to fully reinvent herself after a group era and come out the other side more interesting than before. She broke out as a member of Wonder Girls back in 2007, and when she stepped away to focus on school in 2010, honestly a lot of people thought that was it for her. Instead she came back as a solo act and delivered some of the most genuinely weird, catchy pop songs the genre has seen — "Gashina," "Siren," "Noir" — each one with this eerie, slightly off-kilter energy that felt completely her own. She writes and produces too, which puts her in a different tier from a lot of her peers. I think what I respect most is that she never chased the safest trend; her aesthetic has always had this dark, cinematic edge to it that makes her stand out in a very crowded industry.
