My Take

Tisha Campbell is the kind of total performer I never want to undervalue: she sings, dances, lands jokes, and breaks your heart, often in the same project. Debuting in Little Shop of Horrors and threading through Spike Lee's School Daze and Eddie Murphy's Boomerang, she was right in the heart of late-'80s and '90s Black entertainment. The training from her Newark arts school shows in comic timing that simply feels effortless. Beneath the radiant smile there's the toughness of someone who earned every break. I have a real soft spot for the bright, hardworking talents who make it all look easy.
