My Take

Tony Lewis gave the Outfield its soaring voice and its low-end pulse, and that combination still impresses me. Singing those stratospheric choruses on "Your Love" while anchoring the bass is no small feat. What lingers, though, is the bittersweet arc of his final years: after decades with the band he finally stepped out alone with Out of the Darkness in 2018, only to pass in 2020 just as that solo chapter was beginning. There is real poignancy in an artist finding his own name and losing the time to enjoy it. Yet his songs still play, outliving him, as the best ones always do.
