My Take
Outside Japan, Toru Hashimoto is the face of Osaka politics, so it surprises people that he was born in Tokyo. Osaka claimed him regardless. Kitano High School, Waseda, a law practice, then television fame, and from there straight into the governor's office and later city hall — the speed of that climb still looks absurd to me. His bluntness made enemies, and I won't pretend his record is settled. But he dragged local politics out of the committee room and into language anyone could follow, and people who had never cared about a municipal election started watching. He is back to commentary now, arguing as hard as ever.
