My Take
Will Champion is the spine of Coldplay, and I think drummers like him are chronically underrated. Raised in Southampton and steeped in Nick Cave, Dylan, Tom Waits, and Irish folk, he brings a depth of musical literacy that shapes the band's expansiveness far more than fans usually credit. As a multi-instrumentalist content to anchor rather than grandstand, he embodies the unglamorous craft that lets a frontman soar. I admire performers who measure success by what the whole record needs rather than personal spotlight. The quiet architect of a band's sound is exactly the kind of musician I find myself respecting most.
