Tōru Furuya

I genuinely don't think you can grow up watching anime and not have Tōru Furuya living rent-free in your ears. This is the guy who voiced Amuro Ray, Tuxedo Mask, Yamcha, Seiya, and somehow made each one feel like a completely different person sharing one throat. What gets me is the range: he can be a hot-blooded teenage hero screaming into the void one minute and a cool, world-weary rival the next, and you'd swear it's two actors. He started as a child performer and was still on the front lines past seventy, and the Seiyu Award and Tomiyama Kei Award reflect that standing. But in May 2024 he apologized after admitting a four-and-a-half-year affair with a fan 37 years his junior, including striking her once and pressuring her into an abortion; he then stepped down from Detective Conan and One Piece, and his Yamcha role was recast. That record belongs in any honest assessment.
