My Take

Will Ferrell's genius is total commitment. Plenty of comedians can write a funny line; almost nobody can hurl a six-foot-three grown man's entire body and dignity into a dumb premise without a flicker of self-protection. That shamelessness is actually discipline. Watch Anchorman or Step Brothers and notice he never winks at the camera. I also think he is underrated as a builder, since his producing work helped create a whole ecosystem for absurdist comedy. The Mark Twain Prize confirmed what fans already knew: beneath the absurd characters sits one of the most rigorous comic minds America has produced.
