My Take
Will Oldham fascinates me precisely because he refuses to stay put. A Kentuckian who sporadically attended Brown and has recorded under Palace, his own name, and finally Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, he treats identity as something fluid rather than fixed. That restlessness could read as evasion, but I hear it as devotion to the song over the brand. His voice, cracked and lonesome, carries more emotional weight than any polished production ever could. He's also a genuine actor, yet it's that weary, intimate delivery that defines him for me. In an industry obsessed with image, his commitment to the bare, haunted essence feels almost defiant.
