Yoshito Okubo

The stat that stops me with Yoshito Okubo is this: J.League top scorer in 2013, 2014 and 2015, with a place in the Best XI each of those years. Leading a league in scoring once can be a hot season. Doing it three years running, in your thirties, is something else entirely. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1982 and listed at 170 cm, he was never going to win games in the air, which makes the sustained goalscoring more interesting rather than less. For the national team he made 60 appearances and scored 6 goals, a return that has been argued over endlessly by Japanese fans, though it never really dented what he did domestically. He has since retired from playing and works as a football commentator, and he brings the same bluntness to the microphone that he brought to the penalty area. I find that refreshing. When a former striker says a chance should have been buried, he has the receipts to say it.
