My Take
Young MC is too easily filed under one-hit novelty, and I think that undersells him. "Bust a Move" is so breezy and witty that people forget it won a 1989 Grammy for Best Rap Performance, real recognition, not a fluke. The USC education shows in his writing; there is a cerebral cleverness behind the playful flow. London-born and breaking through in America, he also worked as a producer and actor, a wider résumé than the hit suggests. To me his lightness is the achievement, not the limitation. Songs that stay fun for decades are harder to make than they look.
