Yuki Nakashima

Yuki Nakashima, born 12 September 1997 in Wakayama Prefecture, took an unusual route into voice acting. She started as a child model and actress, appearing in magazines and commercials, then passed a voice acting audition and joined the idol group Earth Star Dream. She is also a singer and a bassist — and that last detail is the one I keep circling back to. Plenty of voice actors sing now; it is practically part of the job description in Japan. Far fewer walk onstage with an instrument. What I suspect matters most, though, is the child-actor beginning. Someone who grew up being looked at by a camera develops a physical relationship with performance that doesn't disappear when the work becomes purely vocal. You can often hear it — a sense of a body behind the voice. A graduate of Meguro Nihon University Junior and Senior High School, she is still in her late twenties and affiliated with Beffect, which in this field means she is arriving at the stretch where the best roles tend to come.
