Yukie Nakama

Yukie Nakama's career makes more sense the longer you look at it. She came out of Urasoe, Okinawa, took the Elan d'or Newcomer Award in 2003, and then refused to be one thing: she could anchor a loud school comedy and play deadpan inside an oddball mystery, and neither felt like slumming. That range usually gets an actor called versatile and then quietly forgotten. Instead both registers became career-defining. Two decades on, with almost no noise around her, the work simply keeps accumulating.
