Yuriko Yamaguchi

If you grew up on subtitled anime, you have heard Yuriko Yamaguchi more than you realize. Nico Robin in One Piece, Ritsuko Akagi in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sonia in Eureka Seven, Nurse Joy in Pokémon — four roles that share a register but almost nothing else. What strikes me is how little she leans on the obvious trick. A low, composed voice invites an actor to coast on gravitas, and she refuses. Robin's calm is armor built over something unspeakable; Ritsuko's calm is intellect papering over a private collapse; Nurse Joy's is simply warmth. Same instrument, three completely different reasons for the stillness. Born in Osaka in 1965, now with Aoni Production after her Vi-Vo years, she has also built a long career in narration, the least glamorous corner of the craft. She is not a performer who announces herself. She is the one who quietly makes a scene mean more than it says, and that is a rarer skill than volume.
