My Take
Yuvan Shankar Raja strikes me as a genuine disruptor in Tamil film music. Folding Western elements and hip hop into a fairly traditional industry, and helping kick off its remix era, took real nerve. I am drawn to composers who push against the prevailing sound rather than safely echoing it, and his Filmfare Award win suggests the gamble paid off. Beyond composing, he sings and acts too, which speaks to a restless creative appetite. There is a streak of rebellion and playfulness in his music that I find genuinely refreshing, and Chennai clearly produced something distinctive in him.
