My Take
Zaz, born Isabelle Geffroy in Tours in 1980, won me over the instant I heard that husky, warm voice. She blends jazz, chanson, soul and acoustic textures into something unmistakably her own, and her breakout single Je veux, a defiant rejection of material wealth in favor of love, still lands like a gut punch. Winning a Music Moves Europe Award in 2011 confirmed she had reached beyond France. What I love is her refusal to follow trends; she sings on her own terms. You can hear the grit of someone who came up the hard way, and it makes the music ring true.
