Abi Masatora

Abi Masatora, born Kosuke Horikiri in Saitama in 1994, is a sumo wrestler who fights the way tall men should but usually do not. At 188 cm he uses relentless thrusting attacks rather than settling into a belt grip, which makes his bouts short, loud, and decided almost before the crowd has settled. He debuted in May 2013, reached the top makuuchi division in January 2018, and wrestles out of Shikoroyama stable. The number I keep coming back to is five: five gold stars, meaning five wins over a reigning yokozuna. Add four Fighting Spirit prizes and one for Outstanding Performance and a pattern emerges — this is a wrestler the very best of his era genuinely do not want to face. He also won his first top-division championship in November 2022, and was suspended for three tournaments in 2020 for breaking the association's COVID-19 guidelines and lying about it. That is a different thing from being consistent. His style trades reliability for danger; on a bad day he is pushed out early, and on a good day the sport's biggest name goes backwards off the clay. For a spectator, that unpredictability is worth more than a steady winning record. You watch him because something might happen.
